The Coos Bay Public Library Foundation was established in 2001 as an independent non-profit Oregon corporation comprised of dedicated members of the community who believe that the excellence of a community is mirrored in the quality of its library. Realizing that tax dollars alone will not allow the library to reach its full potential, the Foundation's purpose is to encourage private gifts and donations that are crucial to the library's future development.
All donations to the Foundation are used to benefit the Coos Bay Public Library.

COOS BAY PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Coos Bay Public Library was established in 1910 through the efforts of a dedicated service group, the Progress Club. Members of the Club also obtained a grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation for the town's first library building, dedicated in 1914. The library has since grown and played an essential role in the quality of life for five generations of Coos Bay area residents, reflecting the community pride it has inspired.
From its beginning, the Coos Bay Public Library has sought to serve the diversity of interests and needs that marks a free people. The library is a storehouse of knowledge, but also a place where people of all ages and from all walks of life search out answers, sharpen their talents, and stretch their imaginations.

CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

The citizens of Coos County have long been library supporters. They voted in 1979 to dedicate tax dollars for operation of all Coos County public libraries. They made this support permanent in 1992 with establishment of a tax district for the eight public libraries. With this sound financial base, gifts to the Coos Bay Public Library are available to enrich and improve the library's educational programs, collections, facilities, and to provide computer access. The Foundation supports the library in promoting a love of reading and the development of lifelong learning.

REASONS FOR GIVING

People give to the public library for a variety of reasons:

  • Out of love of the community itself, with pride in its achievements and its quality of life, recognizing that a community is often judged by its public resources, including its library.
  • In gratitude for gifts a library offers – stimulation for inquiring minds, solutions to problems, amusement, inspiration, wisdom, and the rich heritage of our past.
  • Because a gift to the library is both visible and tangible yet possessed of long-lasting influence. One book will feed thousands of minds for years to come.
  • In honor of one who is respected and loved, or in memory of the departed.
