July 10th - Picture Bride (Japan/USA, 1994)

The story of 16-year-old Riyo who journeys to Hawaii in 1918 to marry a man she has never met, except through photographs and letters they have exchanged. Hoping to escape a troubled past and to start anew, Riyo is bitterly disappointed upon her arrival: her husband is twice her age and Hawaii is not the paradise she expected. As Riyo comes to terms with her new home, she discovers a land full of hardship, struggle--and unexpected joy.

August 14th - The Son (Belgium, 2002)

Olivier is a divorced carpentry instructor at a vocational training center whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of a mysterious student. Francis, a 16-year-old boy, is unaware of any connection he may have to his new teacher, but it is clear that the weight of the past is a heavy burden on Olivier. Soon, the secret that binds the boy to Olivier and Magali is revealed and a profoundly emotional and morally complex situation unfolds.

September 11th - The Pope's Toilet (Uruguay, 2007)

It's 1988, and Melo, a Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border, awaits the visit of Pope John Paul II. 50,000 people are expected to attend, and the most humble locals believe that selling food and drink to the multitude will just about make them rich. Petty smuggler Beto thinks he has the best idea of all--he decides he will build a public toilet in front of his house and charge for its use. His efforts bring about unexpected consequences, and the final results will surprise everyone.

This will be an ideal chance to learn the most basic steps to using the Internet. One time session of one and one-half hours.

Introduction to the New Library Catalog - This session is designed to assist users with the library's new online catalog. Basic searching will be covered, as well as how to set up and access one's library account in order to renew or request holds on materials from home. One-on-one sessions by appointment.

Searching the Web - This Internet class will show the basic tools for finding information on the Internet. Some explanation will be made of what kinds of search engines there are and how they work, and why some information is hard to find on the Web. Attendees will learn how to use a search engine effectively. One time session of two hours. Always held at the North Bend High School Technology Center.

How to Sign Up and Use Free Email - This class will take users through the process of signing up for a free email account, how to send and read email, how to open and send attachments, and how to print or save email messages or attachments. Two sessions, 1 1/2 hours each (3 hours total).

Email refresher workshop (supervised practice) - The library offers, once a quarter, a workshop where users may refresh their email skills. This offering is designed to provide a low-stress opportunity to practice sending and receiving email, attaching and viewing pictures, working with email folders and developing email address books. There will be no formal lecture but the instructor will be available to offer suggestions and answer questions. Attendees must have a web-accessible email and bring their ID and password to the class.

PREREQUISITE: an email account accessable by web browser via the library's Internet computers. Examples include Yahoo!, Hotmail, Charter, Verizon and many others. There should be a web address that you can go to in order to access your email account when away from home. If in doubt please see the instructor before the day of the class for assistance.
This is a one-time class that meets for two hours but students are free to leave once their questions have been addressed.
