1.     CALL TO ORDER

Chair Bob Adams called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. Board members present were Curt Benward, Joyce Day, Jon Littlefield, Ralph Mohr, Rondi Potter, and Tom Williscroft. Roger Gould was not able to attend. Friends of the Library President Marie Benton was present. Staff members present were Ellen Thompson and Carol Ventgen. Curt Benward was welcomed back to the Board. He was appointed by the City Council on July 6.

2.    MINUTES AND CIRCULATION REPORT

Ralph moved approval of the minutes for the June 17, 2004, meeting. Joyce seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously. The circulation report for June was discussed and accepted as mailed. Later in the meeting, a listing of top circulation days for the library was distributed showing Tuesday July 6, 2004, following the July 4 holiday closure, as fourth busiest day to date.

3.     TREASURER’S REPORT

The June treasurer’s report was accepted as mailed.

4.     CORRESPONDENCE

There was no correspondence.

5.    PUBLIC COMMENTS

There were no public comments

6.     LIBRARIAN’S REPORT

The mailed report was discussed. Copies of a revised general library brochure were distributed.

7.    FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT

Marie said the next book sale will be August 7 and 8.There will be a member’s presale starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday everything will be half price from noon to 3:00 p.m. and in the Myrtlewood Room, there will be a $1.00-per-bag sale from 3:00 to 4:00.

8.     OLD BUSINESS

a.     Coos County Board Appointment – Interest in the position was expressed by one person, Crystal Shoji. Ralph moved that the Coos Bay Public Library Board recommend to the Coos Bay City Council that Crystal Shoji be appointed to the Coos Library Board. Jon seconded the motion and it as approved unanimously.

b.     The Future of Libraries – As the beginning of a series of discussions about developing library services and trends aimed at making long-range plans for the Coos Bay Public Library, statistics were distributed and discussed: comparative statistics for Coos Bay and Oregon public libraries with similar service populations, and recent Coos Bay circulation figures based on the type of materials checked out.

9.     NEW BUSINESS

a.   New Procedure – It was noted that Coos County libraries had decided to place the district Internet use policy on the screen of every public-access computer. Patrons must agree to the policy before they are able to have access to the Internet.

10.    ANNOUNCEMENTS

There were no announcements.

11.     ADJOURNMENT

The meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m. The next meeting will be Thursday, August 19, 2004, 5:15 pm.
