URBAN LEGENDS and EMAIL!

Not everything on the Internet is true, nor is everything your friends, relatives, or co-workers email to you true. Sometimes they are misinformed by their friends, relatives, or co-workers.

Somewhere at the beginning someone writes up a piece of untruth and either posts it on a Web site or emails it to several people. The recipients think it's the most wonderful or alarming or sad thing they've ever heard so they send it to several people they know, who do the same, and so on, until it's been sent to millions of people. In the meantime the person who wrote it is laughing at how many gullible people there are in the world.

So how do you prevent being used and abused? You do it by checking the facts of any email you receive regardless of who sent it to you and NOT forwarding it to everyone you know. Oh, and how about a nice note to whoever sent it to you about the errors in their email so they will think before they hit the send button? Others will thank you! Just be sure to use a little diplomacy when you tell them they have just forwarded a bunch of malarkey to all their acquaintances. If you do this often enough they will either learn to check their facts or stop automatically sending you silly emails.

Fortunately you don't have to be a famous researcher to check the facts! The easiest approach and the one that will answer most of your questions is to look up the story on the Urban Legends web site at Snopes.com - http://www.snopes.com. It has its own search box and you only have to type in a few clues from the email to find the right legend. Other sources include: Urban legends or myths - Definitions How Urban Legends Work - http://www.howstuffworks.com/urban-legend.htm
