TIP OF THE MONTH

Know the difference between CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, and DVD-RW?

CD, in this case, is the shortened version of CD-ROM or Compact Disc-Read-Only Memory. Adding -R means that it you can write data files to it but cannot change the content of the individual files later, although you can usually add more files at a later time. -RW means that you can both write and change the contents of individual files, thus RW means 'rewritable.'

DVD stands for Digital VideoDisc or Digital Versatile Disc. Both are forms of optical storage, which allow for storing large amounts of data, whether text, images, audio or video. The average CD-ROM typically stores 650 MB (megabytes), or about 700 floppy disks worth of material. DVDs are capable of storing up to 4.7GB, or several CDs worth. DVDs have both a more efficient storage technology and are able to write data to both sides of the DVD. This is why many movie DVDs do not have paper labels glued to one side like CDs do.

Many computer manufacturers no longer provide floppy drives in their new computers since so many people use CD-RW disks instead of floppies.

Finding Local Events
