INTERNET CLASSES AT THE COOS BAY PUBLIC LIBRARY



March 2006
  • Beginning Mouse - March 17th (Friday), 9-10:30 a.m.
  • Searching the Web - March 22nd (Wednesday), 3:30-5:30 p.m. Note:Please note that this class is held at the North Bend High School's Technology Center. Maps and directions are available at the Reference Desk.
  • Introduction to the Internet - March 31st (Friday), 9-10:30 a.m.


Call 269-1101 x 222 to sign up, or ask about the classes at the Reference desk the next time you come to the Library. Remember that classes at the library start at 9 a.m. sharp so please arrive at the front doors by 8:45 a.m.

Opportunities in the Area



Bay Area Seniors Computer Club (BASCC) - You must be 50 yrs of age or more to join. Dues are $12 for individuals and $18 for couples per year. Meetings are at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Thompson Ave., on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month at 9:30 a.m. for the Social Hour and 10:00 a.m. for the meeting. Interested parties may attend one meeting free before joining. See their Web site at www.geocities.com/bayareasrcompclub/

BASCC offers a variety of classes on an as-needed basis. The class size is usually 4-6 learners.

The presenters for the March meetings are:

Coquille Valley Senior's Computer Club (CVSCC) - Regular meetings are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. At the March 13th meeting Lucindy Meikel will give a presentation on creating Web sites using the free Yahoo Geocities programs and templates.

Membership is open to all seniors who are at least 50 years old. Visitors are welcome. Come visit us or call Bob Kimball (396-4971) for more information.

North Bend Public Library Computer Workshops
Each class is offered every few months. Please call Dianne at 756-0400 if you would like to be notified when a workshop is scheduled. The main offerings are; Dazzling Databases (that are provided by the Coos County Libraries), Surfing the Coastline and Useful Internet Websites Workshop.

Southwestern Oregon Community College - Adult non-credit classes to introduce you to Windows, word processing, Internet, Email and more.

Computer Training - Mini Classes



Please join beginner computer classes held in the Newmark Center. Newly equipped with 24 comfortable workstations, and Microsoft Office 2003, the project-based classes taught by SOCC faculty are organized into 2 sets: the very beginner, and learners ready for the next step. Classes run for 2 weeks so you can catch them all! Call 888-7116 for more information.

Pay one $25 fee and take as many classes as you like during the quarter! Payable at the first class with check or money order, do not bring cash. Minimum of 8 students or class will be cancelled.

Computer Basics II: Next Steps Beginners


Newsletter - create multiple page and column newsletters and brochures with pictures and logos. Presentation Power - use Microsoft PowerPoint to jazz up your next program mixing text, images, sound, and video. Open Computer Lab: A quiet place for study or research. The ALSP offers a broad range of software from MS Office to self-paced learning tools such as Mavis Beacon Typing and PLATO learning software.

Note: All evening classes meet Monday through Thursday from 5:30 - 8:20.

Excel - Spreadsheet Basics - Take the mystery out of Excel spreadsheets! Learn about Workbooks and Worksheets, how to enter and manage data, Edit Cells, and much more. Future classes:
An introduction to Windows, Internet, Email and Microsoft Word. This 36 hour class will get you up and running on your new (or old) computer.

Instruction is followed by practice time so if you don't yet have a computer you can still learn about them and then go get your own.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Print Preview - the frugal (and environmentally conscious) persons' aid. Whenever you need to print from the Internet be sure to utilize Print Preview to only print the information you really want. Otherwise you may find the last page of your printout is merely advertising.

Go to File in the text menu, then select print preview, scroll through the pages, observing the page numbers. After you determine which pages you do want, press Print, then in the print menu select the radio button next to Pages and enter the numbers you want, such as from 1 to 3 or 1 to 1 if you want only the 1st page, see the illustration below. Then press print.

Another option is to highlight only the text/images of a Website you are interested in, and then go to File, select Print, select the radio button next to Selection, and then finally press OK.
